Lockdown in Italy, 13 March 2020

I haven't been posting lately but for those who don't know, we're living in lockdown in Italy. Didn't really plan this. But the coronavirus situation unfolded rapidly.
Less than 20 days ago there were only 3 cases here. Yesterday alone there were 189 deaths, the highest recorded so far. Hospitals in parts of Italy are overwhelmed and unable to provide the full range of care to those who are sick. So I ask everyone to read this article right to the very end. Tomas has written the article I would write if I had his skill with figures. We've been watching this unfold for nearly 3 weeks and he has come to the same conclusion as us. Italy is only one of the first to ride this wave.
For those who know me, you realise I am not an alarmist. I am a balanced, calm and relaxed person. But the stories here in Italy of elderly patients dying alone in hospital corridors are enough reason to set aside your frustration at having freedoms curtailed. The Italians have accepted the rules of social distancing and travel restrictions very patiently and responsibly, and they are to be applauded. If only Australia would act now, you could flatten the inevitable curve and save lives. You may not think the problem exists, but look at the data. Great leaders act early to protect our most vulnerable regardless of the potential for ridicule. I know it is not easy, but I would like to return to see my elderly parents once more.
