My daily life in Italy couldn't be in greater contrast to the reality that continues to unfold further north in this country, and now in so many other countries near and far. I'm sure many of us find ourselves in a similar position. We perform the relatively fortunate act of simply staying home, while others apply their skills to the unimaginable task of being there, day and night, for those most affected.

So many stories of dedication. Nurses and doctors coming out of retirement, graduate doctors being thrust into situations that their studies could not have foreseen. In the face of such hardship they continue to volunteer, responding to government callouts in overwhelming numbers. And they come from beyond their own borders. "For the first time since the Second World War American doctors and nurses are operating in our country," said the Director of Italy's Civil Protection Department, Mr. Agostino Miozzo when Samaritan's Purse set up a complete field hospital in Cremona.

I am uplifted by the stories of nightly cheering, clapping, singing and recognition for these people we may never meet. Our voices and our gratitude echo through Italy, Spain, Australia, and send ripples around the world.

Just as they must enter each new day with the focus, presence and willingness to act for others, let's be sure that, in the relatively peaceful existence that we have had thrust upon us, we also remember that we too can do something that matters: #bepresent with those around us; #begrateful for the wonders that appear; #begenerous with our skills and our talents; #stayhome because it can save someone's life.
